The RCP at The Spine project saw us work alongside a stellar team of award-winning architects, designers, and fitters to create bespoke signage that was worthy of the RCP’s spectacular new home in the north. The Spine is an innovative building that uses biophilic design to create workspaces that incorporate nature into their design, resulting in buildings that are healthy for bodies, minds, and productivity.

Our brief for this project meant that we were tasked with the design, manufacture, and installation of a range of signage across multiple floors in what has been billed as one of the healthiest buildings in the world. The building owners were aiming for WELL Platinum and BREEAM Outstanding accreditations so it was imperative that we deliver signage that met these standards. This meant that everything from our designs, to our manufacturing and installation processes had to adhere to the strict criteria for these demanding accreditations in order for them to be granted – no easy feat. We had to rethink some of our tried-and-tested manufacturing and installation methods, but our team rose to the challenge and created solutions that both met the criteria and performed as well as our usual techniques.

From the initial on-site meeting through to the final hand-off, this project took six months to complete. The signage installation was just one part of a largescale fit-out with many different contractors involved, and it involved some of the most ambitious and innovative designs we’ve worked on. We worked closely with RCP and Overbury to create a range of unique signage for the project that showcased key branding elements, was stylish and functional, and incorporated elements of nature.

The showstopping piece of signage for the RCP project was definitely the stunning ‘living wall’. For this part of the project we created halo illuminated letters mounted to an irrigation system that contains living plants. The results look absolutely spectacular and the benefits aren’t just aesthetic. All of the plants are high-oxygen producing so the building is constantly flushed with fresh oxygen, creating a super-healthy environment that looks after the body and the mind.

Other branded signage used in this project included:

  • Halo Illuminated 3D Lettering with living irrigation system
  • Flat cut letters
  • Projecting tray signs
  • 3D letters
  • Fret cut illuminated sign trays
  • One-piece rafa canvas
  • Each type of signage incorporated RCP branding and wherever possible manufacturing and installation techniques that supported the health credentials of this flagship building that has added another layer of interest and innovation to Liverpool’s famous skyline.
