We had the pleasure of working with QWERTY to deliver one of the country's biggest Flex-Faces for one of the country’s biggest biscuit businesses. When it comes to McVitie’s, it’s hard to say what’s richer — their history or their Rich Teas.
The sign itself is what’s known as a Flex-Face. It involves installing a custom-made frame that contours around a space, then printing a PVC banner slightly larger than the frame. The print is then tucked into the frame using clips placed every 300mm around the perimeter. Doing this creates tension within the print and lets the artwork flourish whilst also being extremely practical. They can come in all shapes and sizes, but at 54 metres long, this Flex-Face is truly one of the biggest ever manufactured and installed. It is an accolade that we are proud of, and to be able to overcome the challenges of installing something so grand, just shows that not only we are experts in all things signage, but also experts in complex installs.
The biggest hurdle to overcome was the sheer scale of it. At a gigantic 337 square metres, it took eight expert installers to manoeuvre the banner into place, a precise operation that left no room for error. Working to a tight deadline, we managed to install it all in one day, using cherry pickers, an insane amount of clips and professional know-how. The printing of the PVC also brought challenges which we tackled head on. Given its size we had to split it into various panels and weld them together to make the 54.3m x 6.2m size and our ever-creative design team strategically placing the artwork elements such as biscuits, type and the logo so the seams are not visible when in person. We did extensive testing to achieve the McVities blue and allowed it to resonate with the brand’s identity. The design of the frame required a lot of technical prowess and was powder coated to the iconic blue, which really lets the design breathe. Spot-lighting helps illuminate the banner in the dark of night.
In the world of big signage, this one really takes the biscuit.
